Watertight wood containers referred to as “barrels” in the U.S. and as “casks” in the U.K. have been a valuable feature of everyday life dating back to around 300-400 years B.C. It is believed that the techniques of shaping, heating and bending staves was borrowed from boat builders of yesteryear. Celtic casks became a currency of sorts, transcending language and cultural differences. The Scotch-Irish brought barrel making to the hills of Appalachia in the 1700s, and we honor this history through our vision, our mission, and our shield.
